Its my favorite day, National Black Dog Day, and that is important, why? because black dogs are the most over looked ones at the shelter. It can take up to twice as long for them to find homes. Give us black dogs a chance, we promise to love you forever!

GIANT thanks to whomever sent the buns this prezzie! There was actually 2 of the Oxbow timbells and our big buns took off with one package while I was taking the packaging out of the room. :)

We are so grateful for our village! With so many pigs and buns in our program, we are needing more supplies. This was a great gift to receive, thank YOU ❤️

Please welcome this cutie to MDF. You're finally safe after a week of being on the run. ❤

Thank you to the good sam who saw him and did something. She reached out for help and had a lifeline from the DB group, who texted us before they would had to have driven over 100 miles to help, we then called our foster Lisa who made arrangements for good sam to have a place of safety to drop off the bun, to Kenny who picked up the bun and brought home.

THIS is what a village is. We a(Back yard) Breeders and pet shops don't do this, they don't care.

and yet, with all this –

Help me understand when there are at least 13 rabbit rescues and assorted local shelters within at least 100 miles of Chicago who have rabbits available for adoption- HUNDREDS of available bunnies and rabbits available for adoption. Darling, friendly, loving rabbits just waiting for a forever home and yet people still chose to go to pet stores or (back yard) breeders.

Still gobsmacked.

I. am. gobsmacked.

This rabbit is the 280th stray since Easter (March 31, 2024).

280th!

NOT 1 of these strays were microchipped, spayed or neutered.
NOT 1.

Every. single. stray was intentionally abandoned.

NOT 1 rabbit had an owner looking for it.

NOT 1 was lost.

EVERY one of them was discarded outside, left to fend for themselves in all types of weather and locations- deep in brush of forest preserves, in neighborhoods, in country fields, where they lived in absolute fear as prey animals. Many were also left in cages or boxes, at shelters, churches, corners, or public locations.
Which also means ALL of these rabbits were either (back yard) breeders OR they were purchased in pet stores.

What gives?

Breeders are only in this for money. They don't keep in touch with adopters, they don't educate, they don't go over behavior (for instance when a bunny hits maturity how they spray, hump, honk, get destructive and mischievous, don't litter pan train well, and the list goes on.) They don't discuss proper diet with pellets, hay and daily salads. Why? because they just want the money. Many of these bunnies are inbred often leading to issues such as over grown teeth. And, we rescues and shelters know this because we are accruing the vet bills for dentals often.

Did you know that the bunnies in pet stores are taken from their moms way too early and housed together with terrible husbandry and diet.? they are often housed in glass cases with no enrichment, bright lights, no hides and live in tremendous stress because they are prey animals and need places to hide.

And yet, people still shop.

WHY?

ALL of us rescues, and the majority of shelters are spaying/neutering, micrcochipping, vaccinating, litter pan training, fully vetting, fecal checking to make sure no parasites, and are aware of behavior of each rabbit- as our foster homes know the rabbits personalities and behavior, which is a great match for said adopter. We are all here to answer any questions and keep open communication as we ALL want our adopters and rabbits set up for success.

Bear saw Dr Brown today too. He is still a hot mess-but, he is our hot mess, and, he is happy and totally smitten with our 12 + year old senior Netherland Dwarf, Fala. He sends love and thanks all of you who have been cheering him on and supported his care.

Today, Guy (guinea pig left in a box at Dunkin Donuts) and Gigi, our sanctuary old gal -who is now going blind had a check up with Dr.B

Guy is approved for adoption. This one year old boy is a love and a perfect addition to any family.

Gigi is holding her own, she shares life with Snowy, our lethal white male pig. We have added daily eye lubricants to her care needs. Can you hear her? She is wheeking for her greens as I type. ❤️

Yesterday we visited our friends at Ness Exotics with Alfie. This little guy was abandoned in a cage at a church. He is doing great and is transferring to his new family as foster to adopt today! BIG thanks to Natalie for temporary foster! Anna and fsmiky thank you for welcoming Alfie into your hearts and home.

Thank you to the good Sam who saw something and did something when she found this guinea pig. Thank you to our friends Famous Fido Rescue Adoption, Wellness & Learning Center for calling and putting us and the finder together.

My sincere hope is the neglect and abandonment of all creatures at crisis levels will end very soon. The ACOs, shelters/rescues and fosters are running at max levels.

Today was a big day! Flower and Honey were spayed by Dr Moy at Chicago Exotics, and Noah was neutered by Dr Bell at Morthland Animal Clinic. We are SO grateful for all our relationships, and the exceptional care and expertise our exotic team of doctors and staff provide to MDF buns and pigs.

HOORAY for Adoptions

In July, sweet darling Archer made his way to our friends and foster, Darlene. He had a recent ruptured cutereba and another testing under his skin. Through all the pain, this boy remained his sweet, perfect self.

Cassie had filled out an application looking for a male bun as her family had lost theirs and it was time for another. After our talk, we knew Archer was the one and will now live a life of love versus fending for himself where he had been abandoned.

Thank you so much Cassie! And thank you Darlene for fostering and the additional care Archer needed with his wounds. thanks to our friends at Ness Exotics for getting Archer in on emergency, and your excellent care.

HOORAY for Adoptions! Billie had been returned t

HOORAY for Adoptions!

Billie had been returned to no fault of his own as the resident pig passed away and the family no longer wanted pigs. Dario saw Bullie and that was that, he had his new home! Billie is shy and timid- Dario has been doing fabulous and keeping in touch with lap time and socializing. Billie is one blessed pig! Thank you Dario!

Penny +Jude were a return too. Their devastated mom had to return due to life threatening heart and breathing issues. And, like that Kyra and her mom and brother all stepped in to give these girls a great landing. Thank YOU Kyra!

And thank you Gianna for always saying yes to fostering!

12 years ago today while volunteering at a suburba

12 years ago today while volunteering at a suburban shelter, this little girl and seven of her siblings arrived. They were found in a garbage bag destined for a river in Kentucky. When I went to the kennel, she crawled over the others to come say hello. I wasn't looking for another dog, but as we know in rescue, we never are! Happy Gotcha Day Rubie girl! Life is so blessed with you in it.
